The North West Hospice today (Wednesday March 24th) announced details of a refurbishment programme, due to begin in April, which will improve accommodation and facilities for hospice patients and visitors.
Commenting Paul Wilson, Chair of the Board of the Hospice said: “This new development will greatly enhance our facilities and the service we provide to our patients and their families. When this refurbishment is c omplete, we will be in a position to open a further 2 beds. The new revised layout will provide 3 separate bedrooms en-suite and a 5 bedded room with 2 bathrooms. The project will also include the development of a separate day assessment area for patients and some hygiene related upgrading work. The Home Care Service will continue without disruption and all Home Care staff will be contactable at the Mall Sligo as normal”.
Commenting Dr Cathryn Bogan, Consultant in Palliative Medicine at the Hospice said: “Given the nature of the work that will be underway, we will need to temporarily relocate the Hospice Inpatient Service for a period of approximately 3 months. We will be doing this in the most sensitive way possible and with minimum disruption to our patients and their families.
To facilitate this refurbishment, Sligo General Hospital has provided a unit in the Hospital for the duration of the project. This means that we can maintain the same inpatient bed capacity during the project. We are particularly pleased that we will be remaining on the same campus while the work is underway at the Hospice which we hope will minimise the inconvenience for our patients and their families. We expect that the work will be completed at the Hospice in the summer and we look forward to caring for our patients in an enhanced and improved facility”.
Cara O’Neill, HSE General Manager Primary, Community and Continuing Care in Sligo Leitrim added: “The HSE is very supportive of the excellent service provided at the North West Hospice and this development will further enhance the service provided to patients and their families at the Hospice. We work very closely with the Board and staff of the Hospice and will continue to do so to ensure the very best supports and quality of care is provided to patients and families”.The North West Hospice administration team will be contactable as usual at the Mall, Sligo and details of the plans are available there for the public to view.
